This post goes out to my dad, who got me into photography growing up. As a kid, I started taking photos on his old 35 mm film camera and developing them myself in a dark room, and probably owe a lot more to my dad than what I give him credit for. He wrote me this email last week:

“You have a very safe and enjoyable trip. Not too many people are able to accomplish what you are about to do. You are accomplishing what I missed doing when I was younger. We are proud of you. Best of luck to you. We will pray for your safe trip. Let me know what I can do to help. Take care.”

To which I replied:
“Thanks dad. It’s never too late to live out your dreams. If you have a dream, go chase it regardless of how old you are. I love you. Carpe Diem, Reuben”

Dad:
“I will be satisfied watching you accomplish my dream. I love you.”

I leave in 2 days for my Arctic photo residency! I created this stop motion animation mainly for fun and to test out the Lowepro DryZone Backpack before I hit the elements next week. I really did load this bag with 2 DSLR cameras and 3 lenses while testing. Yesterday my friend Evan was helping me out and we got caught in the middle of a torrential downpour literally in the middle of shooting the DREAM sequence. We were soaked to the core, but thankfully my gear stayed dry. I’m so grateful to be partnering with Lowepro, and next week we’re doing a giveaway so stay tuned for details!

A short and fun 25 second slow motion GoPro test clip from PMT Dance Studio’s Urban Renewal All Styles Battle featuring:

As expected, the GoPro really doesn’t perform that well in low lit conditions, especially at high frame rates; all of the sequences in this clip were filmed on the GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition at 120 fps. However, I was able to get some shots at angles that I normally wouldn’t be able to get with a traditional camera. I’m doing a series of tests before embarking on a major GoPro multi camera project. Seattle!! Check out my friend Adam’s documentary feature film, Shake the Dust, that tells the story about breaking and hip hop in the developing world. It screens today and tomorrow at Seattle International Film Festival. Tickets and info here: http://www.siff.net/festival-2014/shake-the-dust.

When I moved to NYC just over 3 years ago, a friend told me I needed to meet Adam, but that he was in Yemen filming a documentary about breaking. I was immediately intrigued and inspired. Adam’s been working on this documentary for over 5 years, using a lot of his own resources along the way to finish the film. I’m super proud of him and can’t wait to see Shake the Dust on the big screen!
